Employers should pay towards healthcare, says MHK

An Onchan MHK wants to charge employers to pay towards healthcare insurance for any staff on a work permit.

Peter Karran has suggested the idea to Economic Development Minister John Shimmin saying it could be a new area of income.

He thinks employers should pay towards healthcare, direct to the health service, to help meet any additional costs incurred by dealing with those who need a permit who live here.

Mr Shimmin has dismissed the idea however saying employers already contribute by paying National Insurance and Income Tax and says introducing a new fee could be a large and unplanned expense at a time when some sectors are struggling.

The liberal Vannin leader thinks its implementation would help in two key areas.
