A scallop fisherman has found out the hard way not to fish for queenies outside the permitted times.

Skipper George Southwell was charged at Douglas Courthouse yesterday when he pleaded guilty to fishing one hour after the time when his vessel should have hauled its fishing gear.

There are strict rules on the times people can fish for scallops within the Island’s territorial sea.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes fined Mr Southwell £6,000 after concluding he made a genuine mistake.

The full fine for such offences can reach £50,000.
