Volunteers who act as the Island’s fifth emergency service have been recognised by Her Majesty the Queen.

28 Civil Defence volunteers, who work alongside the police, fire service, ambulance and coastguard, have received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal.

In the past year volunteers have completed more than 3,300 man hours on call outs and training.

Two members who have completed 27 years of service have also been recognised with the Civil Defence Long Serve medal.

Fewer than 90 of these have been awarded through the British Isles – with the Isle of Man gaining four of these honours.
