The high number of students returning from university are blamed for a rise in unemployment figures.

At the end of July there were 1017 people unemployed, which represents a rate of 2.3%.

During the month 255 people signed on and 230 signed off, giving an increase of 25 in the total registered unemployed.

The Treasury say the spike was also down to a number of individuals having left or lost jobs in retailing and catering.

There were 460 vacancies notified to the Job Centre, with 196 positions still vacant and held on file.
