Nearly half of the sports fan who voted in last night's Sports Personality of the Year Awards wanted Mark Cavendish to win.

The Manx cyclist topped the poll with 49.47% of the vote, which was just over 169,000 votes.

Second placed Darren Clarke got 12.34% of the vote, whilst third placed Mo Farah had 8.7% percent.

Chief Minister Allan Bell has described the award as a fitting finale to an exceptional year.

In 2011, Cav won the Tour de France green jersey and was crowned road race world champion.
