Could change be on the cards for local authorities?

It looks like the new Minister for Infrastructure has local authority reform on his agenda.

In the House of Keys yesterday, David Cretney said a review is to be carried out in the coming months.

Mr Cretney says turn-out in the last two local authority elections has been poor and the number of contested elections have been low.

In 2008, there were only elections at eight out of 31 authorities.

The Minister says this raises questions.[play media file below]

In 2004, the then Department of Local Government and the Environment proposed reorganising local authorities but that time round the plan proved unpopular and was eventually shelved.
