Measles outbreak on the Island
Publication Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2011 13:59
There's been an outbreak of measles on the Isle of Man.
Public Health officials say a small number of cases have been reported in people over the age of 20.
Two patients developed complications and one needed treatment in intensive care for pneumonia.
Director of Public Health Dr Parameshwaren Kishore says it appears the cases were caught on-island although the source isn't known.
The reason it's affecting adults is because most young people will have been vaccinated against it.
Dr Kishore says measles begins with flu-like symptoms and then a rash develops..[play clip]
