The public won't be given the chance to decide who should be Chief Minister.

Tynwald voted against a referendum on whether the electorate should appoint the Island's Chief Minister.

Douglas South MHK Bill Malarkey had called for a vote to be held, asking the public if it would like to elect the leader of the Isle of Man Government.

Mr Malarkey also wanted a referendum on whether the Legislative Council should be elected by the public.

A lengthy debate saw politicians for and against the motion making their case, but the motion was defeated when members voted.
