Fire near NSC 'suspicious'

Firefighters were called out to tackle a large fire near the Quarterbridge last night.

Douglas fire crew were called to a report of smoke coming from a building at Millmount, at the rear of the NSC.

On arrival cthey were met with a fire in an empty house and determined that it was not safe for crews to enter the property to fight the fire.

This meant to all firefighting was conducted from outside, which the Fire Service state was 'difficult.'

They directed water into the empty building through the roof, which had failed in some areas due to flames.

IOM Fire and Rescue Service said: 'The cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious and the Fire Service is assisting the Police with their enquiries. Any persons with any information regarding the cause of the fire are advised to contact the Police.'

It took approximately 4 hours to extinguish the fire and checked the site afterwards regularly to make sure there were no hidden hot spot to cause another fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police.
