Public views sought on contempt of court proposals

The Government is seeking feedback from the public on plans to update the Island's contempt of court laws.

The Attorney General's chambers want to modernise the current legislation that deals with conduct that could interfere with the administration of justice.

The current laws have been reviewed after a criminal trial on the Island had to be abandoned because of photos being taken and published online showing jurors and officials involved in the case.

The changes would mean those found to be in contempt of court could face a fine of up to £10,000 or 12 months in prison.

A public consultation is being held on the proposals before the new laws are considered by the branches of Tynwald.

Details of the consultation can be found on the Government's website. Submissions must be made by September 28th.
