Fire services praises action of NSC staff

The Island's fire service has praised the actions of staff at the National Sports Centre following a fire in the facility's changing room.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire, which happened shortly after 5.30pm yesterday.

Fire crews say the damage in the locker room is severe, while surrounding areas also sustained smoke damage.

Firefighters spent around three hours at the scene, using breathing apparatus, thermal imaging cameras and three fire engines to put the fire out and ventilate the scene.

The Fire and Rescue Service later acknowledged the good work of staff for placing a backup call to ensure the emergency services were on their way and evacuating everyone from the building.

Most of the NSC's indoor facilities will remain closed until further notice, but the pools will reopen today.
