MHK says Chief Minister needs support of Keys and LegCo

An MHK says he voted against plans to change the way the Chief Minister is elected because the post requires the support of both branches of Tynwald.

Jason Moorhouse was one of four MHKs to vote against plans to exclude the Legislative Council from the voting process.

The Arbory, Castletown and Malew member took to social media to explain his decision, describing it as one of the most challenging he has faced this year.

Mr Moorhouse believes the Chief Minister should have support from LegCo as well as the House of Keys, and that too much constitutional change has been enacted this year.

He also highlighted the number of new MHKs voted in at the last election, warning that a new and untested member could quickly take control of the Manx political system.

The Chief Minister, Speaker of the House of Keys and Environment Minister also voted against the changes, but there was enough support from other members to progress the motion.
