Fire crews spend five hours tackling Gansey fire
The Island's fire service is highlighting the importance of working smoke alarms after spending five hours of the scene of a fire in the south of the Island.
Crews from Port Erin, Castletown and Douglas were called to a structure fire in Gansey yesterday afternoon.
The incident required 20 firefighters in breathing apparatus to tackle the flames in poor visibility as the building was heavily smoke logged.
The fire was located in the basement and ground floor, but smoke spread throughout the first and second floors of the property, resulting in the teams remaining at the scene for several hours to vent the building.
The fire service is praising the actions of the occupants for raising the alarm and ensuring all persons were accounted for before the emergency services arrived at the scene.
Officers are also reminding that fires can spread fast in homes, and that smoke alarms will give you time to get out.
