Transport team look for tram braking solution in Switzerland

Members of the Department of Infrastructure traveled to Switzerland in a bid to find a safety solution for the Snaefell Mountain Trams.

Director of Public Transport Ian Longworth, a traction engineer and specialist railway safety engineer recently travelled to Switzerland to visit the manufacturers of modern trams operating a similar gauge to those in the Isle of Man.

The team were assessing the safety systems installed on such trams to see whether they can be adapted for use on the Snaefell Mountain Railway.

The mountain trams had to be suspended for a time and operated under a slower than usual speed limit following a brake failure which left a tram running across the road at the Bungalow.
