Treasury won't screen rented housing for benefit claimants

Treasury has no intention of checking whether rented accommodation for benefit claimants is of an "acceptable standard".

That's what Onchan MHK Peter Karran was told in the House of Keys this week - he queried whether there were any plans to bring in a set of standards.

He also wanted to know whether rent allowances could be introduced for those living in substandard conditions saying people should be protected.

Minister Eddie Teare says the proposed Landlord and Tenant Bill of 2014 would have addressed those issues if politicians had agreed to it:
