MUA fined for health and safety failings

The sentence has finally been passed in the Manx Utilities Authority case over the death of a Water and Sewerage Authority worker.

The MUA was fined £17,000 for 'failing to discharge its duty' under the Health and Safety at Work Act and told to pay £5,000 worth of costs.

It pleaded guilty to the charge after a wall collapsed on December 3rd 2012 - killing 52-year-old John Gell.

He was carrying out excavation work to replace a water pipe in Peel when it happened.
