Manx support helps net $16 million for West Africa

Manx support to cut illegal fishing in coastal communities in West Africa has helped net $16 million in earnings for the country. 

Government has provided a fisheries protection vessel and on-going advice to Sierra Leone - as well as the installation of a satellite monitoring system for the fishing fleet there. 

The help has contributed to an estimated 35 per cent increase in local fish landings for the country’s fishermen.

We asked DEFA Minister Phil Gawne if he thinks this positive news will be enough to sway the detractors who feel the money is better off spent locally:
