Victoria road prison to be demolished this week

After lying dormant for the past four years the Isle of Man’s former prison will be demolished, with work starting this week.

The building opened as a prison in 1891 and has been empty and unused since the last of the inmates were transferred to the new facility in Jurby in 2007.

In this interim period there had been much speculation as to what development work could be carried out on the site.

Demolition work on the two acre site is expected to be completed by early next year, with the space then going into government’s land bank for future development.

Home Affairs Minister, Juan Watterson has said he thinks this is the best possible outcome.
