Ship Registry reflects on pirate incident in Africa

The Isle of Man Ship Registry says its thoughts are with the crew involved in a hijacking aboard a Manx registered vessel.

Earlier this week the Energy Centurion ship, which is owned by a Greek company, was raided by pirates who took the crew hostage off Togo in West Africa.

They stole around 3,100 tonnes of gas oil from the tanker’s cargo as well as cash, valuables and items of equipment from the ship and from the 24 crew onboard.

Thankfully the ship, which was drifting off Nigeria, was released back to the Master and Crew on Thursday afternoon with the crew unharmed.

David Morter, the deputy director of the Ship Registry, says the crew do take precautions against hijacking:
