Former Baines lawyer refused Privy Council appeal

A Manx advocate convicted of money laundering has been refused permission to bring an appeal before the Privy Council.

Jenny Holt acted on behalf of former Tycoon Trevor Baines during his money laundering trial in 2009.

However, in 2011 she was found guilty of handling £400,000 that Baines had admitted stealing from a trust fund.

Holt lost an appeal against her conviction in February, but earlier this month she sought permission to apply to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

That’s the highest court of appeal for crown dependencies.

However, Manx Appeal Deemsters have refused to give Holt leave to appeal to the Privy Council.

They say they don’t accept there’s been a risk of a serious miscarriage of justice resulting from her conviction.
