Government suggests moving the Southern 100 Races

Talks over possible changes to the Southern 100 are in their early stages according to the Economic Development Minister.

John Shimmin’s department has suggested running the event over a weekend in future.

At the moment it’s held in July and runs from Monday to Thursday.

Moving it would likely need a change in the law as roads on the Island can’t be closed for racing on a Sunday, for religious reasons.

Holding the races over a weekend has also raised concerns about clashes with other motorsport events.

In the House of Keys today, Mr Shimmin confirmed the club has been approached about a change of dates[play cut]
