Over 2,000 people walk to the Tower of Refuge

Over 2,000 people turned out to take part in the first organised walk to the Tower of Refuge this evening.

Drizzly conditions didn't deter the hordes who queued on the promenade to get access to the steps where council staff were helping people on to the beach.

Douglas Development Partnership arranged the event to coincide with the low spring tide.

There was a window of just over two hours when the sea was far enough out to be able to cross to Conister Rock on foot.

The Coastguard and the RNLI were on hand to make sure walkers stayed safe and weren't in danger of being cut off when the tide came back in.

It's hoped the success of tonight's event will mean another supervised walk can be arranged in future.
