Changing trends in alcohol consumption

The Chief Constable says the authorities and the licensing trade need to address the changing trends in alcohol consumption.

The financial situation means we're spending less on socialising and analysis shows more people are choosing to drink at home and then visit pubs and clubs later in the night.

It means door staff often become the first point of contact for people who have drunk too much.

Mike Langdon says this lends even more support to the accreditation of security staff who will be registered, trained and qualified to carry out their jobs.

In a speech to the Licensing Court, the senior police officer also said underage drinking still concerns him.

He acknowledges the trade is doing its utmost to combat it, but indicates the force will be robust when it comes to people who buy alcohol for under 18s.
