£20,000 maximum fine for breaking tree protection laws

The government is highlighting tree protection legislation with a warning that breaking the law could result in a massive fine.

The Departments of Environment, Food and Agriculture and Infrastructure have put out a reminder to developers, property owners and landscape gardeners.

People wanting to carry out work on trees - including pruning or felling - need planning permission and a licence from DEFA.

Anyone who breaks the rules could face a £20,000 fine.
