Repairs will be carried out on Castletown bypass next week after a section of the newly-relaid surface was damaged yesterday by a 16-tonne excavator being loaded on to a low loader.
The owner of the privately-owned machine, which had been working in an adjacent field, has taken full responsibility and will meet the cost of the repairs.
The excavator was designed for off-road use, unsuitable for the road, and significant damage was done to the surface by its tracks. The damage extends across both carriageways and covers around 20-square metres.
Bosses at the Department of Infrastructure say repairs will be completed in time for the Manx International cycling event to be held on the Billown Course next Saturday.
