Some Onchan residents are still confused about which constituency they belong to, according to local commissioners, who’ve decided to revisit the issue.

 

In 2016, a review committee oversaw a restructuring of the House of Keys electoral boundaries, to create the 12 current constituencies.

 

As part of this, almost 2,500 residents in the Howstrake area of Onchan were placed in the newly-formed Garff, split from the rest of the town.

 

The move was a deliberate effort to ‘even out’ the population sizes of the two constituencies, with both now having roughly 5,000 registered voters.

 

All of Onchan, including the Howstrake area, is still served at a local level by Onchan Commissioners.

 

The local authority’s chairman Robin Turton says some ratepayers still feel confused by the current status quo, and the board will discuss the issue at its meeting on Monday.

 

A newly-formed boundary review committee is due to sit again in 2022, following the local and national government elections in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
