New powers for the Road Transport Licensing Committee to license vehicles carrying goods come into affect in the new year.
From 1 January 2019, the independent body will be responsible for regulating the vehicles, and the registration of Manx operators both on and off Island.
It includes any transport with a ‘maximum laden weight of over 3,500 kg’.
The new powers come after Tynwald passed the Road Transport Regulations Act in July this year.
Under the act, existing operators must apply for new licenses and registration by November 2019.
The drivers of goods vehicles will not be regulated by this legislation.
The RTLC is an independent body which has responsibility for regulating the transport of passengers.
It enforces laws designed to protect the public by ensuring public transport is efficient, safe, and a quality service.
The legislation covers licensing of taxis, private hire cars, minibuses, buses and coaches, plus their driver and operators.
