DoI closed Mountain Road 13 times so far this year

The Department of Infrastructure has issued 13 road closure orders for the Mountain Road so far this year.

The DoI has given permission for the route to be closed for a number of reasons so far in 2018, including cycling events, the TT races and filming.

The Mountain Road was closed just twice more in the entirety of 2017 by the Department, which included two separate closures due to snow and ice in December.

The figures were revealed in response to a Freedom of Information request, and the Department stresses that it isn't the only organisation with authority to shut the road.

The numbers don't include closures from the police for incidents such as crashes and shorter spells of bad weather.
