Dog walkers urged to keep animals under control at nature reserve

Police in the north of the Island are urging dog walkers to keep their pets under control when walking them in the Ayres National Nature Reserve.

A warden report revealed there have been several incidents in recent months of dogs not on leads fighting each other, resulting in one being badly injured and needing veterinary treatment.

Dogs can be exercised without being on a lead in the reserve between the end of July and the start of April, but failure to keep their animals under proper control can lead to a prosecution and fine of up to £2500 for the owner.

Officers are urging owners not to let their dog run off into the distance out of view, make sure their carry a lead and clean up after their dogs.

Incidents can be reported to Police Headquarters on 631212 or the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture on 685835.
