Benefit cheats falsely claim more than £200,000

The Treasury is cracking down on benefit cheats after more than £200,000 was falsely claimed over a six-month period.

Treasury inspectors also stopped a further £160,000 being paid out by identify fraudulent claims before the payments were made.

Eight individuals have been prosecuted for benefit fraud in the first half of the current financial year for false claims worth between £2,000 and £13,000, two have which have received prison sentences.

The Treasury insists it will be doing everything in its power to identify and investigate instances of benefit fraud.

The Government is also encouraging those who suspect someone may be making false claims to report it anonymously through its website.
