Minister says younger workers cost more to employ

The Economic Development Minister says younger workers receive a lower minimum wage because they cost more to employ.

Laurence Skelly told this week's sitting of the House of Keys that those aged 18 to 20 often require extra training, mentoring and can result in increased insurance premiums.

The Minister added that many companies don't vary rates according to age, but that a lower rate for younger workers can help them into the labour market.

Workers aged 21 and over currently earn a minimum of £7 per hour, while those aged 18 to 20 must earn at least £6.65.

Mr Skelly also reminded MHKs that they, along with members of the public, can contribute to a consultation on the Island's minimum wage system.
