Kirk Michael to kick on

A number of target shooting clubs in the island are low on members - but they are fighting back to attract new names to the sport.

Kirk Michael Rifle Club oversaw a recent beginners' session at the club and was pleasantly surprised how many young people - with their parents - showed up to have a go at the sport, or in some cases return to it.

It is an injection of new blood into a club that urgently needs new, younger members after more than 80 years in existence while working hard to maintain the range and Kirk Michael's facilities for the winter season ahead.

'It was good to see the young people in the village making use of the club and if we can keep their interest going, it will give us good new members for the club, for the team,' said the club's secretary.

Egg-spect new dawn at Easter Shoot

The highlight of the target shooting calendar in the island is the annual Easter Shoot and planning is already well under way for the 2017 event.

Quite apart from the world-class facilities already in place at the Sinclair Range in St Johns, the intention next year is to build an all-electronic air rifle and pistol target range at Onchan for the first time. Arrangements are in place to hire the necessary Megalink electronic targets from Scotland together with experienced and internationally qualified range staff to look after them.

The competition will run from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th April 2017.

Scottish Target Shooting gets message across

This new, SportScotland funded governing body based in Scotland now offers membership from outwith the country and in fact Kirk Michael Rifle Club has already joined, thus securing the vital insurance for equipment and public liability STS offers.

Kirk Michael has been given the go-ahead to enter STS competitions and could mean a Kirk Michael team shoots in the SSRA Team Prone league in 2016-17.
