Harry Creevy has made the most of the incredible weather conditions that has been witnessed each Monday throughout the season, during the IoM Shooting Clubs weekly competitions and this week was no exception. Creevy once again shot a score in excess of 618, a phenomenal result. He normally has club mate Mike Duncalf close on his heels but on this occasion, with the absence of Duncalf, second slot went to the ever improving Sharon Drysdale, a somewhat newcomer to target shooting, with a posted score of 611.0, she not only claimed second position in round 5 of the Osborn Carpets 2nd 600, but romped home in the lead of the Empire Garage Tynwald Shield by six clear points from Nick Brown, recording a personal best result in the process. It was great to see Rachel Glover who was having a break on the Island with her family, taking part in the evening’s activities and posting an excellent third position on 608.6, closely followed by Tracey Skelton in fourth on 608.1. – Four talented ladies in four of the top five positions !

14 year old Rhys Keown wins The Windsor Cup Handicap
The Isle of Man Rifle Association’s Windsor Cup handicap match was the last competition using the July handicaps and teenager Rhys Keown, was one of the individuals who had a significantly lowered handicap for August by 6.46 however, the determined Keown would still have been victorious even with his new handicap. Another Keown family member had her first taste of target shooting competition and although rather tentative at the outset, Sue, Rhys’s mother appeared to enjoy the experience.

Chit Chat
The outdoor season is now drawing to a close and with just four weeks of competition remaining, I am sure the winter indoor season will be on many minds. It must be remembered that the IoM Shooting Club continue to hold monthly handicap matches on the first Sunday of each month throughout the winter months and training/coaching is also still available at weekends.
The Island shooting fraternity has many facets but when the discipline of target shooting is involved, we have two specific aspects that have been kept low profile but of which we are extremely proud. The Shooting Club has a 300 metre team World Champion, Harry Creevy, who has represented the Isle of Man a staggering eight times at the Commonwealth Games and a little more recently, Stewart Watterson qualified as an ISSF accredited judge, a very arduous side to the sport. Stewart has also represented the Island at several Commonwealth Games and after ‘boxing his rifle’ for the final time a few years ago, decided to move into target rifle administration and after completing many ISSF judging courses, was awarded a judges accreditation. Due to his qualifications, Stewart was delighted to be invited to be a senior judge at the London Olympics in 2012 and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and has once again been honoured with an identical position in Rio de Janeiro and is at present, officiating in Brazil.
