Jail for Liverpool woman who brought drugs to the Island
Fri, 11 Dec 2015
A Liverpool woman who made a "grave error of judgement" by concealing drugs internally and travelling to the Isle of Man has been jailed.
32-year-old Gemma Riley was arrested at the Sea Terminal in Douglas on August 5th after disembarking from the Manannan.
She was searched and when nothing was found was taken to Noble's Hospital where she admitted concealing Class A and Class B drugs inside her body - three packages were removed containing cocaine and cannabis.
At Douglas Courthouse yesterday the court heard the drugs were for her own use - she'd previously admitted two charges of production, two of possession and an unrelated charge of obstructing a police officer.
Her advocate told the court Riley was "utterly remorseful" saying it was the "harshest lesson" she could learn and that prison on the Island, away from her family and 14-year-old daughter, was a "lonely place to be".
Sentencing her Deemster Montgomerie jailed her for two and a half years but dismissed an application for an exclusion order telling her "you've already paid a high price" and would continue to do so.
He added "People in the North West of England must realise that sentences for trafficking drugs here are severe".
