Excellent result at the Glen Gardens, Laxey
Port St Mary took the long trip north to the Glen Gardens, Laxey with the intention to win for the second week in succession. Things did not go the ‘Port’s way in Division 1, as Laxey is a very formidable and consistent rifle team and the perfect result appears to have been produced on the night – a draw ! To rub salt in the wound, Laxey also claimed Division 2 but allowed the win to go to the ‘Port in Division 3. Top shot for the home team went to Suzanne Curphey on 99 but four team mates all shot 97 to give the team 487 x 500. For the visitors, Derek Kermode posted his best score of the season so far alongside Ashley Gardner junior both hitting 99 with Ashley Gardner (Snr) and Kevan Kneale both posting 97’s.

Enjoyable weekend with UK Coach Michelle Smith
Twelve of the Isle of Man Shooting Club attended a squad development and coaching course at Sinclair Range on Saturday and Sunday under the instruction of UK coach, Michelle Smith. All of those who attended enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to further visits in the near future. Yorkshire born Michelle has an outstanding profile which includes – Multiple British Champion in three disciplines, 3 positional, Prone and Airgun, British record holder on 3 occasions, one of which was attained at an Easter Festival at Sinclair. To add to the above, Smith has collected a Commonwealth Games Silver medal in 2010, European Gold and Silver medals and is currently studying sports physics and coaching. The IoM Shooting Club wish to thank Michelle for her time and effort and also pass on thanks to island shooter Lara Ward, who initiated and organised this valuable event.
Veteran Lord claims the Winsor Cup on count-back
Part of the coaching weekend mentioned above consisted of two club competitions and all those involved in the coaching course joined other members to shoot concurrently, both matches. The first being The Winsor Cup, a handicap competition, produced some reasonably good scores in near perfect conditions. With Stewart Watterson in action as Range Officer, twelve shooters started the 65 minute match. Top gun score was claimed by Mike Duncalf on 589 closely followed by Andy Potter just a point behind on 588. Tom Lord posted a score of 584 and once his handicap of 24 had been added he topped the results with 608, an identical score of 608 was posted by Nick Brown on 579 + 29 but the count-back system came into force and Brown lost, producing a 95 to Lords 96 in their final series. Fifteen year old junior shooter, Matthew Roosen and Jayde Lambert both shot in their first competitive 600 match and both produced excellent scores, Roosen only once dropped below 90.
