Around 1,000 passengers were affected by the problems with the Ben-my-Chree yesterday.
The vessel suffered an electronics failure and problems with its starboard pitch control which led to long delays and cancellations.
Extra sailings on the Mannanan were put on to transport passengers and the freight service was managed by the charter ship Arrow.
Engineers have now fixed the fault and a normal service has resumed today.
Chief executive of the Steam Packet, Mark Woodward said the nature of the problem meant it took a long time to rectify.
