Engineering and aerospace work is being outsourced to off island locations due to the lack of skilled workers on the Isle of Man.
That’s according to Economic Development Minister John Shimmin who said these sectors are facing acute skills shortages because of the forecast in growth and an ageing workforce.
Mr Shimmin said he was aware of the importance of a flexible and skilled workforce and as such had discussed the issue with the Department of Education and Children.
As a result the College is now actively considering future changes to its engineering facilities and an alternative approach to apprentice training.
Mr Shimmin added that his department was working closely with the private sector to identity skills shortages which could prevent the Island achieving its objectives of continuing economic growth and economic diversification.
