Controversy and a few suprises in local authority elections

Fri, 27 Apr 2012

There are new faces at a number of the Island's local authorities following yesterday's elections.

Elections were held for 12 out of the 24 boards.

The biggest change for any local authority line up was in Port Erin where five members lost their seats.

The poll there was topped by former police officer Ged Power, who was standing for the first time.

In Douglas, former MHK Bill Malarkey won a seat on Murray's Ward.

The most controversial of the elections was in German where there was a mix up with the count.

Suzie Boot was told she had won a place on the commissioners, alongside her husband Geoffrey.

Half an hour later though, it was revealed that 100 votes in favour of Kenneth Watterson had somehow been missed, which means he should have won the seat.

The matter is now in the hands of advocates.
