The Manx Electricity Authority is expecting an increase in the number of Island residents opting for electric cars, as the cost of conventional motoring becomes progressively more expensive.

At the moment, only around ten people are using the MEA's three public electric car charging ports.

The MEA has recently had a visit from a new electric 'supercar' called the 'Tesla Roadster Sport.'

It can accelerate from 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds, has a top speed of 125mph and a fully charged battery will last around 245 miles.

Chief Executive Philip King says the performance of green vehicles is improving all the time and it's inevitable that more people will choose to drive electric or hybrid cars as they become more practical and reliable.

The MEA offers cheap off-peak electricity overnight for people to charge their motors at home and supplies the charging points.
