DoI to prioritise road maintenance

Tue, 25 Oct 2011

The Department of Infrastructure doesn't have enough money to maintain the Island's roads - even in their current condition.

That's from Minister David Cretney, who's been speaking in the House of Keys.

Mr Cretney says it would cost £100m to carry out all the work that needs doing at the moment.

He says the Department has made a clear decision to prioritise road maintenance over big capital schemes.

However, he says there is money in the capital programme this year for design work for the reconstruction of Peel Road in Douglas and £1m to begin work on Douglas Promenade.

Overall though, Mr Cretney says state of the roads is getting worse.[play media file below]
