Further extension for kerbside recycling

The kerbside collection of recyclable household waste in Douglas and Braddan is to be extended for a further five months.

The two local authorities will fund and operate the service as a trial period from November 2011 to March 2012.

The current scheme, which was funded by the government for three years, expires in October.

Onchan Commissioners have backed out and won't continue beyond that date.

A couple of staff will now have to be laid off because of Onchan's withdrawal.

In the case of Douglas, this extension is costing £85,000.

The money is said to be coming from savings and not from rates.

Councillor David Ashford says the extended scheme will allow them to see if a permanent service is possible. [play media file below]
