Campaigner expects changes to assisted suicide law

Fri, 24 Jun 2011

The Chief Executive campaign group Dignity in Dying says she expects there to be a change in the assisted suicide laws on the Island in the future.

Sarah Wootton has been visiting the Island, where the campaign has 400 supporters.

She argues that it would be safer to allow terminally ill patients to die at home.

Currently, those who want an assisted suicide have to travel to Switzerland, where it is legal for a physician to help a patient die.

She also believes a change in the law would bring in greater transparency and accountability.

Ms Wootton told Granada Reports she believes many people would take comfort from knowing they have a choice [play clip]
