Chain failure caused fatal TT crash

Thu, 11 Nov 2010

An inquest has heard how a mechanical failure resulted in a fatal collision for a TT competitor.

Austrian Martin Loicht died at Quarry Bends in the second Supersport race when his rear wheel drive chain failed, causing his back wheel to temporarily lock up.

As a result he lost control of his machine, crashing into the straw bales at the side of the road.

Statements from the Marshals at the scene described how he was conscious and talking at the scene, but later died in theatre at Noble's Hospital.

Coroner Alistair Montgomerie told the court Mr Loicht died of hypovolemic shock as a result of a laceration to his heart.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded.

The 47 year old leaves his wife Nicola and 3 children.
