The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed it plans to demolish the Victoria Road prison.
A planning application to demolish the Victorian building was lodged in August, and is currently being considered by the planning authority.
Several organisations have shown an interest in using the building, including a youth project which held a street soccer tournament in the exercise yard earlier this year.
However the Department says parts of the building have deteriorated too much to allow people to use the site anymore.
The prison has been empty since August 2008, when all prisoners were transfered to Jurby.
