Manx Labour Party celebrates centenary

Thu, 20 Sep 2018

A charity fundraiser is being held by the Manx Labour Party this Friday, to celebrate its centenary year.

Established in 1918, the party was formed at a time where the NHS, old age pensions, and universal suffrage didn’t exist on the Island.

Against this backdrop, the Manx Labour Party gained popularity, standing for fairer taxation and workers’ rights.

At the Laxey Working Men’s Institute on Friday, an evening of entertainment and a celebration of the labour movement has been promised by organisers.

The ‘100th Birthday’ event will see live music from local musicians Phil Reynolds and the Dearly Departed, Kinley, Raine, Sy Hurst & Aaron J Harwood, as well as free tea and coffee.

Tickets cost £5, with all proceeds from the event will go to three charities; Women’s aid, Isle of Man Foodbank, and Housing Matters.

The party is also looking to grow its membership ahead of the next general election, and is encouraging people to sign up.

Sara Maltby, secretary and treasurer for MLP, says it’s an exciting time for the party:
