Tynwald asked to approve boat insurance bye-laws

Sat, 11 Feb 2017

Owners of private boats using the Island's harbours will need insurance if Tynwald gives the go-ahead a new set of bye-laws later this month.

The Department of Infrastructure will seek approval to require owners of pleasure craft to have third party insurance in place when using the Island's marinas and outer harbours, including those visiting the Island.

It's hoped the move will ensure boat owners are covered for damage to other vessels or property within the harbours.

Failing to ensure adequate cover would result in a £5,000 fine as well as the boat being detained.

If the bye-laws are approved they would come into effect on March 1st for pleasure craft berthed in the Island's marinas and a month later for all other vessels.
