Jail for pregnant woman who tried to import heroin

Thu, 09 Jun 2016

A pregnant heroin addict who tried to import more than £8,000 of the drug into the Isle of Man has been jailed for four and a half years.

Police stopped 33-year-old Louise Creer as she disembarked the Ben-my-Chree in Douglas on February 10th - they suspected she was concealing drugs and took her to Noble's Hospital.

Whilst there she refused to be examined or x-rayed telling medical staff she thought she was pregnant - five days later an internal examination uncovered three packages.

These were removed by a gynaecologist on February 16th - they contained over 85 grams of heroin which had a street value of £8590.

Creer later pleaded guilty to production of the Class A drug and possession of it with intent to supply - at Douglas Courthouse last week her advocate said in "desperation" people do "desperate things".

He said she'd only claimed she was pregnant to avoid examination and was in "shock" when the test was positive - adding she must now come to terms with watching the baby grow up "on the outside".

Sentencing her Deemster Montgomerie said it was an "extremely difficult" matter to sentence saying he was "showing her mercy" because she would have to give birth and hand the baby over.

He urged Creer, who's been on a detoxification programme, to continue saying "nobody would ever want a baby to be born a drug addict".
