IoM Archery Junior Championships

Tue, 14 Jul 2015

The Junior Archers had the starring role on Sunday as they took part in the Annual Junior Club Championships. The Championships are divided by age group and shoot distances suitable to that age/gender group. The highest score on the day determines the overall Club Champion. The ‘usual suspects’ - Charlotte Harris, Toby Young, James Hill and Joseph Reaney, were joined by Megan Noon who took part in last year’s Championships and total newcomer William Parkes. The Club Championships marked William’s debut in competition. Weather conditions were good, warm and sunny with only occasional gusts of wind and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Toby, James, Joseph and Megan made up the largest field of the day in the u14’s category. Toby had a 23 point lead over James Hill after the first distance with Megan Noon just 1 point further back. Joseph was a little off the pace in fourth. However Joseph remained composed going into the second distance and posted a score which not only added 81 points to his pb for the round but lifted him into third place. Megan Noon shot a storming second round to overturn her 24 point deficit and take the win to become the u14 Champion. Toby Young, in spite of adding 10 points to his pb for the round, had to settle for second. James Hill slipped to fourth place but still added a terrific 85 points to his pb. It was obvious that all the Juniors had risen to the occasion.

William Parkes shot solidly in the u12’s to record a decent score. Parkes had one miss in the very early stages but was well into his stride over the second distance and we hope to see more of him in the League Shoots. As the only competitor he lifts the trophy at the first attempt.

Charlotte Harris was also the only competitor in the u18’s division. There was no record of Charlotte having shot this particular round before and therefore her score was a personal best. Charlotte recorded the highest score of the day and took the Overall Junior Championship for the third year running.

The handful of adults who turned up to help and organize the Junior Championships also shot a round, with Rhys Moore continuing his run of form to take the win in the Gents Compound WA1440. Dave Moore came second and Pete Mumford had to be content with third. Danny Cowin shot the same round in the Recurve division but was unhappy with his performance over the first distance. Joy Gough shot a Long Metric round.
