Planning sought for Farmers Arms site in St Johns

Wed, 18 Jul 2012

A planning application has been submitted for the site of a derelict pub and former farmers' mart in St Johns.

The Department of Infrastructure bought the Farmers Arms last year for £370,000 and it already owned the nearby cattle mart buildings.

The public house was built in the 1870s near to the railway station for the steam trains that ran between the east and west of the Island.

When the railway closed, the pub was kept busy because of its close proximity to the farmers market but saw a big downturn in trade when the mart closed.

The building has been empty for a number years and didn't attract a buyer when it was put up for sale as a business.

The site is now dilapidated and the DoI already has permission to demolish the buildings.

The new planning application is for permission in principle to develop the land for residential use and it's thought the Department of Social Care will eventually bring forward a scheme.
