Minister willing to vote against Pinewood plans

Mon, 18 Jun 2012

Education Minister Peter Karran is willing to put his job on the line over government plans to buy a £24m share in Pinewood Studios.

Politicians will be asked to agree to the idea in Tynwald this week.

However, Mr Karran who’s the leader of the Liberal Vannin party has been a critic of the Island’s involvement in the film industry for a number of years.

The party has met today and decided that it doesn’t support the motion as it believes film investment is high-risk.

Lib Vannin also thinks the government should be concentrating its efforts on rebalancing the books, creating employment on the Island and growing the economy.

Mr Karran is hoping to be exempt from the Collective Responsibility Code, which allows Ministers to vote against something they already have a publicly declared position on.

He acknowledges that if he goes against the Council of Ministers, he could lose his ministerial post.
